written by Bruce Hoffman
Gravers Lane Gallery is pleased to announce the placement of a Mary A. Jackson’s Journey Basket #4, sweetgrass, palmetto & pine needles, 15 ⅜” x 9” x 7 ½”, into the permanent collection of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
It is a rare and important contemporary basket for South Carolina representing the Gullah people of Johns Island, South Carolina. Among the countless accolades Mrs. Jackson has received over her 60+ year career as a studio basket maker, in 2008 she was honored with a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant in Crafts and Arts Technology. Laura Addison,The Museum's Curator of North American and European Collections, had been searching for a Jackson basket for the permanent collection. While visiting Philadelphia, Laura happened upon Gravers Lane Gallery’s February 2025 exhibition honoring Mary A. Jackson and her work in celebration of Black History Month & Mrs. Jackson’s 80th birthday. Laura returned to the Museum of International Folk Art and presented the Journey Basket #4 to the acquisition committee, who agreed to the purchase.
Thank to Laura and the entire team at Museum of International Folk Art for your work in acquiring this important basket for your collection. You can see more details about the basket through the museum's website
