Artist Statement
I live in southern New Jersey where I share a home, studio and wood kiln with my wife, Linda Shusterman. I am an adjunct professor at Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ and from 1991-2016 served as the Executive Director of Perkins Center for the Arts in Moorestown & Collingswood, NJ. I have an MFA in Ceramics from Clemson University and have been awarded three Artists Fellowships by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the most recent in 2023. My work and writings have appeared in Ceramics Monthly, Ceramics Art & Perception, Ceramics Technical and Studio Potter. My work is made from “wild clay” dug in Millville, NJ. After being processed by hand the clay was thrown on a potter’s wheel and fired in a Noborigama wood kiln using local fallen and storm damaged wood for fuel. As an artist I am striving to reduce the carbon footprint of my artistic practice through foraging and processing local clays and glaze materials and using a renewable fuel source, wood, to fire my kiln.
