Biography
Betsy Hershberg is a jewelry maker, knitting designer, instructor, and published author based in Philadelphia. Using fine threads and tiny needles, she hand-knits sculptural, bead knitted jewelry and accessories, with a focus on one-of-a-kind pieces. Though rooted in traditional knitted stitch making, her work is distinguished by original techniques, unorthodox construction, bead-woven embellishment, and unique, contemporary applications, resulting in what the artist calls “knitting made clever.”
Artist Statement
My work showcases and celebrates the versatility of hand knitting. Each piece has hand knitting techniques at its core. I utilize both traditional plain or bead knitted stitch making as well as a unique bead knitting technique of my own invention that I call Abacus bead knitting. I also employ off-loom bead weaving, embroidery or other methods of surface embellishment to enhance the textural and architectural variety of the work. Most often comprised of fine fibers and small beads, my work has substance but not weight, making a statement while remaining comfortable and easy to wear. All of my work is one of a kind.
