Yvonne Pacanovsky Bobrowicz

BIO

Considered a pioneer in studio textile and fiber art, Yvonne Pacanovky Bobrowicz is without a doubt a Philadelphia icon and national treasure. At the young age of 92, Bobrowicz's drive for expression and creativity keeps her working every day. A major work was recently purchase by the Chicago Art Institute, adding to their stellar collection of her work from post Cranbrook weavings to recent monumental knotted monofilament sculptures. Her work can be seen in the Philadelphia Museum of Arts collection as well as the Racine Art Museum. Bobrowicz was a student of Annie Albers and an early collaborator with renowned architects, Louis Kahn and Anne Tyng.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am concerned with expressing interconnections – interconnectedness and continuum. My work has been combining natural materials with synthetics, relating opposites, randomness and order – dark, light, reflective, opaque, illumination to dematerialization, exploring cosmic energy fields. I have been knotting clear monofilament, a man-made fiber that transmits light, combining it with natural linen, opaque and light absorbent, incorporating gold leaf, reflective and alchemically symbolic – unifying them in a variety of densities, scale, and configurations. Monofilament is a flexible medium – moves with air currents – changes with various lighting, natural, seasonal, and artificial. I am interested in kinetics – dynamic pattern/resultant forms in space-time.
